
A P2 million watchtower and kayak center funded by Seacology inside the 366-hectare Lapus Lapus-Macapagao Local Conservation Area in Sagay City was recently turned over.
“The watchtower will serve as a hub for kayak tours, providing a convenient starting point for visitors eager to explore our enchanting maze of mangroves”, a press release from Sagay City said on Sunday, June 8.
“It will act as a crucial monitoring station for biodiversity and wildlife, allowing us to better protect and understand our local ecosystem”, it added.
Seacology field representative Ferdie Marcelo, said Seacology was pleased to partner with the community.
“With the strong support of the local government, our communities can reach their full potential. Sagay City has maintained its credibility in terms of implementing the project with efficiency and with good record,” he said.
Seacology’s global mission of “protecting the unique habitats and cultures of islands worldwide” aligns with Sagay City’s sustainable tourism development and ecosystem conservation, he added.
Sagay City Environment Natural Resources Officer Mayo Antonio Cueva emphasized the community’s role in protecting this precious ecosystem.
City Engineering Office representative Engr Lawrence Dy said “the structure stands 9.5m from the seabed with a ground floor area of 41 sq. m. and 2nd floor area of 18.50 sq. m. The structure is built from concrete and hardwood; the roofing is long span roof overlayed with cogon to maintain a natural aesthetic that harmonizes with the environment.”
Punong Barangay Wilfredo Villacastin of Bulanon said “I never thought this would become so beautiful.”
City Administrator Ryan Bonghanoy underscored the community’s counterpart in maintaining the new structure.
Association President Joefel Relos thanked Seacology and partners for the realization of the project.
This is the second project of Seacology in the Sagay City. The first one was the repair and renovation of the Community Spa and Watchtower in Suyac Island Mangrove Ecopark, the press release said.*
