A group of Negrenses held a community memorial for former president Benigno Aquino III at the San Antonio Abad Parish Church in Bacolod City Saturday, July 3, to thank him for his service to the country.

The participants dressed in yellow and black joined a mass to mark the 10th day since Aquino, 61, passed away on June 24.

They then proceeded to the Church grounds to lay yellow and white flowers and light candles in front of a tarpaulin bearing the former president’s photo and the message “Para kay PNoy Salamat (For PNoy, thank you).”

Fr. Noli Blancaflor said the memorial was held to thank Aquino for the decency he brought to the Philippines and for the many good things he did for the country that led to the improvement of the economy during his presidency.

He said there are projects being accomplished even now that were initiated by Aquino.

“We thank him for the gift of his person, he totally had given himself (to the country), he’s really a son of his father and of his mother. We are grateful to him and also to his family,” Blancaflor said.

Aquino is the son of former President Cory Aquino and Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino.

Joy Jarabelo, provincial coordinator of the Federation of Urban Poor, said “PNoy died heartbroken… because of the division created by this current administration to the country…so we pray for his peaceful rest in God’s kingdom.”

Jarabelo said she and the members of her group joined he the community memorial to thank Aquino for offering his life to the country.

“Salamat PNoy, we are forever grateful for all your hardships, hard work and good governance,” she said.

Jarabelo said they would also like to say thank you to the family of the former president.

Agnes Hechanova, one of the organizers of the event, said they continue to mourn the passing of Aquino and want people to know that he deserves all the accolades he is getting only now.

He was decent and true to his service to all Filipinos, she said.

Lawyer Andrea Si said the gathering was an expression of how ordinary people love and remember Aquino.

“What makes me sad is that mourning the loss of PNoy has become so politicized that except for official statements and flags at half-mast, our government officials have kept their distance,” Si added.*
