PMA Class 2021 top grad a Negrense; It’s a proud day for Negros, guv says

The Philippine Military Academy Masaligan Class of 2021 top graduate is a 25-year-old Negrense from Barangay Guintorilan, San Enrique town.

Cadet First Class Janrey Cabanero Artus is the class summa cum laude and valedictorian, the PMA announced Monday, May 3.

He is the son of retired Technical Sgt Florencio Artus who spent 10 of his 20 years as a soldier in Marawi City, and Jocelyn Artus, a retired Guintorilan Elementary School mathematics and music teacher.

The Negrense cadet will lead 162 members of his class who will graduate from the academy on May 10.

“Today is a proud moment for the province of Negros Occidental”, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said of Janrey Artus’ achievement.

Lacson, who congratulated Artus, said “graduating from the Philippine Military Academy is remarkable in itself, but you tested your limits and emerged top of your class. With this feat, you will be an exemplar and an inspiration to all the Negrenses, particularly to our youth”.

“It is also noteworthy that the name of your Class, Masaligan, of which you are the front runner, means trustworthy, reliable, and honorable in our local language. With this, I hope that you will fully embrace such honor through your fervent commitment and allegiance to our people and Constitution,” Lacson said.

Florencio said Janrey, their third child, was always an honor student from elementary to college.

He was two months away from graduating as a chemical engineer at the University of the Philippines-Visayas Miag-ao Campus in Iloilo when he decided to join the PMA.

His brother Floren Joy, PMA Class 2017, informed him that the PMA entrance examination was being conducted in Bacolod. Janrey took it and was among those who topped it, Florencio said.

His son did not finish his studies in UP when the call from PMA came, he added.
Janrey has two other siblings, Throy, a criminology graduate, and Lisa Flor, a pharmacist.

Florencio said Janrey is a good person, serious in his studies and does not have any vices.

Janrey on his Facebook page wrote: “Let’s continue to make this life amazing. Let’s continue to be catalysts for positive for change. Let’s continue to be better citizens.”*
