No more Comelec permits for rallies, caravans needed

Ricardo “Cano Gwapo” Tan kicks off his official campaign as an independent candidate for councilor of Bacolod City with a caravan Friday morning.*

Candidates’ rallies, miting de avances and caravans in areas under Alert Level 1 and 2 no longer need Commission on Elections permits, Roberto Salazar, Negros Occidental acting provincial elections supervisor, said Friday, March 25.

Comelec Resolution 10769 amended Resolution 10732 that previously required permits from the Comelec campaign committees at the regional, provincial, and local levels, he said.

The official campaign period for local candidates kicked off Friday with rallies and caravans in various parts of Negros Occidental and Bacolod City.

But Salazar reminded the public to continue to observe COVID-19 health protocols while attending campaign activities, which includes wearing of face masks.

Bacolod City is under Alert Level 1 and Negros Occidental is under Alert Level 2.

Salazar said while Comelec permits are no longer required for rallies, candidates should still inform the Comelec officers when and where they will be held.

Salazar said while the COVID-19 rules on in person campaigning have been eased, handshaking, kissing and going inside residences are still not allowed as a health safety precaution.*
