NIR leads Palarong Pambansa medal tally in early results

Jonel Metoda Jr. added another gold for the Visayan Vipers after ruling the Elementary Boys Javelin Throw with a 52.67-meter throw.*

The Negros Island Region leads the early medal tally of the 2026 Palarong Pambansa in Agusan del Sur, based on partial and official results as of 9:43 a.m. Tuesday, May 26.

NIR ranked first overall with four gold medals, one silver, and one bronze in the first days of the national games.

Western Visayas followed in second place with three gold, four silver, and four bronze medals.

CALABARZON ranked third with three gold, two silver, and three bronze medals, while the National Capital Region placed fourth with three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.

NIR’s strong early performance came after Sagaynon athlete Marjen Iwayan delivered the region’s first gold medal in its Palarong Pambansa comeback by winning the Elementary Girls Javelin Throw on Monday, May 25.

Iwayan, 12, of Sagay City, recorded a 47.20-meter throw, nearly reaching the 49.77-meter Palarong Pambansa record set last year.

DepEd-NIR also reported that Christine Rose Toquero of Escalante National High School secured another gold medal for the region in the Secondary Girls Javelin Throw.

Jonel Metoda Jr. also added another gold for the Visayan Vipers after ruling the Elementary Boys Javelin Throw with a 52.67-meter throw.

Metoda trained under coach Stella Mae Miranda and trainer Norven Ledesma.

Meanwhile, Rajib Ash Catenza gave NIR a silver medal after finishing second in the Elementary Boys 110-Meter Hurdles.

Catenza prepared for the national meet under coach Stella Mae Miranda and trainer Ronnie Daquillos.

The Palarong Pambansa is being held in Agusan del Sur, with student-athletes from different regions competing in various sports events.
