The dengue death toll in Negros Occidental has reached nine, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported on Friday, August 22.
The number of dengue cases in the province from January 1 to August 16 have reached 4,093, the report also showed.
This represents a 28.91 percent increase, or 918 more cases, compared to the 3,175 cases recorded during the same period in 2024.
The PHO noted that the age group with the highest number of cases is 11 to 20 years old.
Bago City continues to have the most number of dengue cases with 965, followed by La Carlota City with 391, Kabankalan City with 371, San Carlos City with 214, and Isabela with 171.
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected female mosquito, primarily the Aedes aegypti. These mosquitoes typically breed in clean, stagnant water.
The Department of Health (DOH) continues to urge the public to practice the “4S” strategy to prevent dengue.
The 4S stands for:
- Search and Destroy mosquito breeding sites. This involves regularly checking and cleaning containers that can hold stagnant water, such as old tires, flower vases, buckets, and water-holding plants.
- Self-Protection Measures. This includes wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants to reduce skin exposure, and using mosquito repellents.
- Seek Early Consultation with a doctor if you experience symptoms like high fever, body aches, headaches, and rashes.
- Say Yes to Fogging only in areas with an impending outbreak, as a last resort to kill adult mosquitoes.*
