Dengue cases in Negros Occidental this year were 5,338 as of Oct. 26, the Provincial Health Office reported on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

These are 313.16 percent higher or 4,046 more compared to the same period last year, which had 1,292 cases, the PHO said.

Bago City has the most number of cases in Negros Occidental at 602, followed by San Carlos with 415, Hinoba-an – 405, Sagay City – 333, Talisay City – 332, Kabankalan City – 327, Silay City – 324, Cauayan – 318, Cadiz City – 292, and Sipalay City – 276.

The dengue related deaths this year are 15.

PHO head Dr. Girlie Pinongan said that the number of cases in October is not as high as in August.

However, breeding grounds of dengue carrying mosquitos cannot be easily removed because of the rainy season, that is why the PHO is still campaigning for the public to keep their surroundings clean, Pinongan added.

Meanwhile, there have been 1,137 typhoid fever cases and 10 deaths, and 1,104 influenza-like cases and one death in Negros Occidental this year, the PHO reported.*
