Migz: May best man win in Bacolod mayoral race

Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri refused to take sides in the 2022 Bacolod mayoral race, and also said he will announce whom he will support for president after the filing of certificates of candidacy in October.

Zubiri, in a press conference via Zoom Thursday, August 12, said Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia and former Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez who are expected to run for mayor of Bacolod in 2022 are both capable leaders and his friends, so may the best man win.

“I love them both, they are both capable leaders,” he said.

The senator, who is running for reelection in the May 2022 polls, said he will be waiting for the filing of certificates of candidacy in October before announcing whom he will support for president.

Zubiri said he has no political party so he is hoping that he will be adopted by some presidential bets to be part of their Senate slates. He will be joining their slates, but not their political parties, he said.

So far he has been invited to join the slates of Davao Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio, Senator Bong Go, Senator Vicente Sotto and Senator Manny Pacquiao, Zubiri said.

“I can work with anyone, they are all my friends,” he said.

Zubiri, who has roots in Kabankalan City, said he is banking on the votes of Negros Occidental, Western Visayas and the rest of the Visayas in his re-election bid.

He said a recent OCTA Research survey showed him at number six among the potential senatorial aspirants, mainly because of support from the Visayas and Mindanao.

He was also ranked No. 7 in a DZRH survey on Wednesday, Zubiri added.*
