
A 38-year-old laborer was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in a river in Barangay Puso, La Castellana, Negros Occidental, the police reported on Friday, Feb. 13.
Police identified the victim as Raymund Nuevo, a resident of Moises Padilla, whose body was recovered underwater at around 2 p.m. Thursday near the boundary of Barangay Puso, La Castellana, and Sitio Natuling, Brgy. Budlasan, Canlaon City.
Initial police investigation showed that the victim was shot by five unidentified armed men while traveling with his live-in partner and their minor child in Sitio Natuling, Canlaon City, on Feb. 11.
Police said the suspects allegedly drew their firearms and shot the victim, who attempted to flee but was pursued and repeatedly fired upon.
Authorities said the victim ran toward a nearby river at the boundary of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental and jumped into the water in an attempt to escape, but was fatally hit.
With the assistance of local residents and disaster response personnel from Moises Padilla and La Castellana, the victim’s body was recovered the following day.*
