The massive cleanup of the Mambuloc Creek in Barangay 2, Bacolod City, to prevent flooding began Wednesday, May 10, Councilor Pau Sy said.

They removed five truckloads of garbage from the Mambuloc Creek on day one, she said. The area to be cleared of garbage is about 30 meters in length and 12 meters in width, Sy said.

She said they cannot say when the cleanup will be completed but are hoping it will be as soon as possible.

Notices to vacate are being issued to 32 families living in the Mambuloc Creek danger zone, City Legal Officer Romeo Carlos Ting Jr. said.

The notices will be served Thursday, and recipients will be given 30 days to comply, Ting said.

The city government will provide relocation sites for those asked to vacate the creek, he said.

Sy said so far eight families have already qualified for transfer to the city’s Arao Relocation Site in Brgy Vista Alegre.

The Mambuloc Creek clean up and garbage hauling is being conducted by the Bacolod City Engineer’s Office-Maintenance Division in collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), barangays 8 and 2, IPM-Department of Public Services, Bacolod Traffic Authority Office and the Office of Councilor Pau Sy, a press release from the city government said.

The initiative is to reinforce the construction program of the DPWH that will be implemented along the creek to prevent floods from happening, it said.

Plans are also underway for the immediate implementation of the BREDCO drainage system involving the construction of the diversion canal to mitigate floods, especially at Rizal Street that passes through the Bacolod Public Plaza and SM City.

Benitez is urging everyone to be responsible for their garbage because it clogs drainages and causes floods in Bacolod.*
