The Negros Oriental provincial government has mobilized immediate clearing operations and relief assessments following a series of weather-related incidents that hit Bindoy town during the transition to the New Year.
Working in close coordination with Local Government Units, Governor Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria assured the public that the provincial Capitol is on top of the situation, prioritizing public safety and the swift restoration of road accessibility following moderate to heavy rains brought by a series of thunderstorms on December 31.
At the dawn on January 1, a landslide was reported in Sitio Kandalaga, Barangay Malaga, Bindoy, which initially rendered the national highway completely impassable to all types of vehicles, the Negros Oriental provincial government reported on its Facebook page.
Clearing operations began early this morning through the joint efforts of the Bindoy and Ayungon local government units, the Department of Public Works and Highways , and a private contractor.
By 12:30 p.m. the affected area was declared partially cleared and is now passable to light vehicles, including vans, pick-ups, ambulances, and rescue vehicles. PNP personnel and Barangay Tanods remain on-site to manage traffic flow while clearing teams work to remove the remaining rubble throughout the afternoon.
The heavy rains also triggered localized flooding in the barangays of Malaga, Poblacion, Domolog, Cabugan, Tinaogan, and Pangalaycayan, the provincial government report said.
Bindoy Mayor Eniego Jabagat has requested heavy equipment, specifically one backhoe and one grader, to assist with the ongoing cleanup.*
