Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson urged Negrenses to honor the sacrifices of World War II veterans by defending freedom, upholding democracy, and committing to unity and peace, during the 80th Negros Island Victory Day commemoration at the Provincial Capitol Park in Bacolod City on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Lacson said the liberty enjoyed today was bestowed by the courage and sacrifice of soldiers and civilians who fought to liberate Negros Island from Japanese forces in 1945.

“To our beloved World War II veterans, we cannot thank you enough for the highest form of service you rendered to our province and to our country,” Lacson said, noting that their devotion to freedom remains a timeless inspiration to every generation.

He added that those who gave their lives on the battlefield, and those who continued to serve even after the war, left behind a legacy of courage that must be honored by cherishing freedom and defending peace.

“As heirs of your legacy, may we find the strength and determination to emulate your patriotism and bravery,” Lacson said, reminding Negrenses that freedom is never free and must be safeguarded against threats both external and internal.

The governor also recognized post-war district commanders, as well as retired officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, for carrying forward the legacy of wartime heroes and safeguarding peace for future generations.
Lacson expressed hope that the commemoration would inspire Negrenses to be “worthy descendants of heroes” and that the memory of the veterans’ sacrifices would guide the province toward lasting peace and prosperity.*
