“Stay hydrated,” Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson reminded Negrenses on Tuesday, March 3.
“Be conscious of the effects of very hot weather and what it can do to our health,” Lacson said.
The forecasted heat index for Negros Occidental is 39°C on Wednesday, March 4, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
This follows a grueling start to the week with the index reaching 40°C on Monday and Tuesday.
The state weather bureau said a heat index ranging from 33°C to 41°C should be treated with extreme caution, as heat cramps and exhaustion are possible. It further warned that continuous activity under the sun at these temperatures could lead to a heat stroke.
SAFETY GUIDELINES
To prevent heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, the Department of Health-Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR) released an advisory recommending the following:
• Limit Sun Exposure: Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during the peak heat hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Hydrate Constantly: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
• Use Protection: Bring an umbrella, wear a hat, or use any available protection from the intense sun.
• Dress Appropriately: Wear light, loose, and cool clothing to help the body regulate its temperature.
The DOH-NIR also emphasized that the public should be especially careful with vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions.*
