Guv doubts impeachment moves against Marcos will succeed

Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Tuesday, Feb. 3, that he does not believe the impeachment complaints filed against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will succeed.

Two impeachment complaints, filed against Marcos by lawyer Andre de Jesus and the Makabayan coalition, are currently pending before the House of Representatives.

Lacson noted that while impeachment is a fundamental part of the democratic process and it remains the responsibility of Congress to act on it, he is skeptical of the outcome.

“Impeachment is a numbers game, so they may not have the numbers to launch a successful impeachment case,” the governor said.

On the economic implications, Lacson said that local and foreign investors may take a step back to analyze whether it is currently the best time to invest in the country.

However, he noted that those who have already established investments in the Philippines will likely continue their operations.

Lacson said that if the democratic process is strictly followed, he does not believe the impeachment moves will negatively impact the country’s economy—provided there are no extrajudicial shortcuts.*
