Mayor Greg Gasataya relayed the national government’s call for unity and cooperation as the Philippines prepares to host the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Manila from November 15 to 17.

He delivered the message during the flag‑raising ceremony at the Bacolod City Government Center on Tuesday, November 3,  a Bacolod City Communications Office press release said.

In reading the official message, the mayor highlighted the Philippines’ role as one of ASEAN’s five founding members in 1967, and its enduring commitment to building a more peaceful, prosperous, and connected Southeast Asia.

The message emphasized that regional cooperation extends beyond diplomacy — it creates livelihood opportunities for farmers, fisherfolk, workers, entrepreneurs, and communities alike. Stronger ASEAN solidarity also enables faster assistance during disasters and makes travel across the region easier and more accessible.

It further called on every Filipino to take pride in the country’s opportunity to welcome world leaders, delegations, and guests, while showcasing the best of Filipino culture, hospitality, and investment potential.

Gasataya also asked the public for understanding as Manila prepares for the ASEAN Summit, noting that some temporary adjustments in travel and traffic may occur due to security arrangements.

He urged residents to rely on official government advisories and help spread accurate information.

Gasataya linked ASEAN’s goals to Bacolod’s growing push as a premier sports tourism destination.

He noted how regional sporting events, such as the Southeast Asian Games, strengthen ties among nations — just as Bacolod aims to do through major competitions.

“That is the reason why the City of Bacolod is also in the thrust in promoting sports tourism,” Gasataya said.

Bacolod City hosted the  FIBA U-18 Women’s Asia Cup – SEABA Qualifiers 2026 from June 2 to 6. This marked the first time the city served as official host for the tournament.  Games were held at the  STI- West Negros University Gymnasium, with participating teams including the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Another upcoming major sporting event is the Batang Pinoy  2026 National Championships, set for December 12–18. The event is expected to draw 35,894 delegates — including 27,763 athletes, 6,144 coaches, and 1,987 officials — representing 207 local government units nationwide, the press release said.

With 30 sports disciplines and 43 schools serving as billeting centers, the competition will give a major boost to local businesses in accommodation, food, transportation, and tourism across the city, it  said.*
