Farmer drowns while spearfishing

A 21-year-old farmer drowned after he allegedly went spearfishing while intoxicated in Bago City, Negros Occidental, police said. 

The victim, identified only as alias “Joe,” was a resident of Purok Mabinuligon, Brgy. Busay. 

Investigation showed the victim was last seen at around 5 p.m. on May 8 when he reportedly went to a river to engage in spearfishing or “panalum” but failed to return home. 

At around 8:30 a.m. the following day, the victim’s father and brother searched for him at the river. 

Authorities said the family members dove into the water and found the victim submerged underwater. 

The victim was immediately retrieved and brought to the riverbank before being transported to the Bago City Hospital, where he was declared dead by the attending physician.*
