Businessman and former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson said he is running for senator as an independent in the 2025 polls to help bring progress to the country and uplift lives.
Singson, accompanied by his daughter Rep. Richelle Singson (Ako Ilocano Ako Partylist), was in Bacolod City on Saturday, October 26, for the MassKara Festival.
Singson said as governor he was able to bring Ilocos Sur out of poverty to becoming the fifth richest province in the country, and now he wants to help the nation.
He said in partnership with a foreign manufacturer he will see to the production of cheaper alternatives to the modernized public utility vehicles required by government
A plant that will be set up in Lima, Batangas, aims to produce 500 to 600 e-jeeps a month, he said.
Singson said he would offer electric public utility jeepneys to drivers for only P1.2 million from the current P3 million with no downpayment and interest.
He also bared plans to put up a Bangko ng Masa that is fully digitalized and will provide E-wallets to the masses.
He said about 70 percent of Filipinos are without bank accounts because many Filipinos keep their money in their homes.
The economy moves when money is deposited in banks, he said.
Singson also said among his priorities if he wins is the crafting of a universal basic income law, which would provide an additional fixed salary of P500 a month for all minimum wage earners 18 years old and above.
Asked why he has not ran for president, Singson said “it is better to be a kingmaker than a king”.
Singson said he will give his P5-million reward to two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo if he reconciles with his family.
I want him to be a role model because family is important, he said.
