Employees of San Miguel Brewery marked the 32nd anniversary of its Bacolod plant with a tree-planting activity in Barangay Estefania, Bacolod City.

The activity also coincided with the 132nd anniversary of the plant’s parent company, San Miguel Corporation, and part of the annual Trees Brew Life project under the Buhayin ang Kalikasan flagship environmental program of SMB.

For this year, the employees planted more than 2,000 seedlings in the perimeter areas of the brewery property that crosses boundaries of the company’s host communities – Barangays Estefania and Granada.

The pandemic has scaled down the implementation of the project, which used to have partners from the media, police, environmental agencies and the communities. However, it did not stop even with the pandemic restrictions that began in 2020. In fact, 150,000 seedlings were planted in Bacolod, Mandaue in Cebu and in Misamis Oriental at the height of the pandemic.

“Seeing these initiatives push through despite the challenges shows our company’s commitment to protect, preserve, rehabilitate forest covers in both rural and urban settings and aid in regenerating mangroves areas in coastal communities,” SMB president Roberto Huang, said during the 2022 project launching recently.

The Trees Brew Life project was first launched in 2010. Since then, over one million trees have been planted in areas in the country where the company operations.

“We are aware that the company has a significant role to play in fostering sustainable development and the need to focus on responsible stewardship of the environment is as important with the nature of our business,” Huang also said.*PR
