Strengthening climate action and advancing sustainable development partnerships are critical to building long-term ecological sustainability.
This was the central message of British Embassy Manila Economic and Climate Counselor Lloyd Cameron, who was the keynote speaker at the opening of Negros Occidental’s 34th Provincial Environment Month on Friday, June 5.
Cameron highlighted ongoing international and local collaborative efforts in environmental protection, focusing heavily on strategic frameworks for building climate-resilient communities and supporting grassroots initiatives throughout the province.
The month-long celebration, officially spearheaded by the Provincial Environment Management Office (PEMO) in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and various government agencies, is anchored on the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
The campaign highlights the critical importance of protecting and preserving natural resources as a foundational pillar for regional climate resilience.
The opening day festivities began with a Thanksgiving Mass held at the Capitol Social Hall, followed by the main program and the 2nd KapitAlam Environmental Quiz, which saw the e participation from Capitol employees.
PEMO head Julie Ann Bedrio welcomed environment stakeholders, local government unit (LGU) representatives, and development partners during the opening ceremonies.
She was joined by Joan Nathaniel Gerangaya, the Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services of the DENR NIR.
To sustain this momentum, PEMO announced a diverse lineup of eco-centric activities scheduled across the province.
Key events include the Abanse Negrense EcoRun and the People’s Organizations’ Product Selling at the South Capitol Road on June 21, followed by a Tree Growing Activity in Kabankalan City on June 23, and a Mangrove Growing Activity in Binalbagan on June 25.
Simultaneous clean-up drives and localized eco-campaigns are also scheduled to take place across various municipal and city LGUs to ensure deep, province-wide community engagement.*
