A tornado destroyed 35 houses and left several families displaced in Brgy. Bantayan, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 3.
Mayor Benjie Miranda said on Monday that he and Vice Mayor Divina Miranda visited the area and to assess the situation .
Initial assistance was given to the affected families by the City Social Welfare and Development Office, and the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office teams continued their assessment, he said.
The tornado hit after a heavy downpour and strong winds battered the area, blowing away roofs, toppling houses, and uprooting trees.
Miranda described Brgy. Bantayan as “tornado-prone,” saying this is already the fourth time a tornado has struck the barangay.
Families who lost their homes are now staying with relatives and neighbors while waiting for further help from the city government.*
