‘Tino’ death toll in Negros rises to 107, OCD says

The death toll is still rising almost two weeks after Typhoon “Tino” hit Negros Island on Nov. 4.

The number of dead increased from 101 on Friday to 107, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Negros Island Region reported on Monday, Nov. 17.

Still missing are 63 Negros Island residents, while injured in the typhoon were 153.

Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said one common reason for the high death toll is the people did not expect “Tino” to hit that hard.

“I think after what happened during ‘Tino’ any preemptive evacuation call will be heeded by the population”, Lacson said.

Rep. Emilio “Dino” Yulo (Neg. Occ., 5th District) on Sunday, Nov. 16, said the body of an 11-year-old boy was found in Brgy Alicia, Brgy 5 in Isabela, Negros Occidental.

The OCD said the fatalities in Moises Padilla were 24, Canlaon City – 21, La Castellana – 15, Hinigaran – 10, La Carlota City – 9, Bago City – 7, San Carlos City – 7, Binalbagan – 6, Isabela – 2, Murcia – 2, Himamaylan – 1, Ilog – 1, Kabankalan City – 1, San Enrique – 1 and Vallehermoso – 1.

Missing in Moises Padilla are 22, La Castellana – 14, La Carlota City – 9, Isabela – 6, Canlaon City – 5, Bago City – 4, Hinigaran – 2, and San Carlos City – 1.

The death toll in Bago is still 7 because the body found in the Bago River on Monday was not from the city, Dr. Merijene Ortizo, Bago City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) head, said.*
