Emphasizing that skills are “more valuable than oil” and “more enduring than gold,” Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Benitez rallied the Negrense youth to pursue world-class excellence during the TESDA Livelihood Skills Competition at the Panaad sa Negros Festival on Saturday, April 19.

The competition, held in partnership with the provincial government, served as a high-energy showcase of local craftsmanship, drawing both provincial leaders and celebrity guests to highlight the transformative power of vocational education in building an industry-ready workforce.

“May this serve as a platform to further enhance the TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) skills of the Negrense youth, and to mold world-class, industry-ready talent capable of competing in national and international skills competitions,” Benitez said.

Benitez, Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson and TESDA Negros Island Region head Niña Dodd, led the opening of the skills development competition.

Also in attendance were Negrense actress Sue Ramirez and Dominic Roque, who brought additional excitement and energy to the festivalgoers.

The program showcased various hospitality-related skills, including cooking, baking, and food and beverage service.

Lacson thanked TESDA for partnering with the provincial government of Negros Occidental to advance skills development and livelihood opportunities through practical education.

“This competition is more than a showcase of talent; it is a celebration of the skill, discipline, and determination of our workers and trainees,” Lacson said. He added that he takes great pride in TESDA’s leadership under Secretary Benitez, noting that his guidance brings a deep understanding of the local context and a strong vision for the future of vocational education in the country.

The event aims to highlight the craftsmanship of Negrenses while promoting vocational education through TESDA. It underscores the importance of job-ready talent, encourages the youth to pursue skilled careers, and supports overall workforce development in the region, a statement from the provincial government said.*
