Sinking of soil in Toboso sitio stops, another suspected sinkhole found

The sinking of the soil in Sitio Bairan, Brgy. Gen. Luna in Toboso, Negros Occidental, has stopped.

The “sinkhole” in the area has remained at 11 feet, 5 inches deep since Feb. 18, Engr. Hospicio Carbajosa Jr., Toboso Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer, said Thursday, Feb. 26.

The sinking may have halted because the rains have stopped and the soil beneath the surface may have dried up, he said.

However, soil also sank in Sitio Bugho, located about 3 kilometers from Bairan, also in Brgy. Gen. Luna.

“We estimate that it is wider than Bairan, around 90 meters in diameter and about one foot deep,” Carbajosa said.

A Mines and Geosciences Bureau team is set to visit the area again in the second week of March with the necessary equipment to determine the cause of the sinking, he added.*
