PVO buoys up bull loan program

With its ardent vision of becoming the center of cattle production in the Visayas, the Negros Occidental Provincial Veterinary Office is once again encouraging all private cattle raisers in the province to avail of its Bull Loan under the Abanse Negrense, Provincial Animal Genetic Improvement Program (PAGIP) for cattle in line with its Animal Livelihood and Food Security programs.

With the recent increasing trend of cattle population in the province from 49,306 heads in 2016 to 55,000 heads in 2020 amidst the pandemic, it can be said that it is attributed to natural breeding through the Bull houses and AI Centers established by the provincial government with the joint efforts of supportive LGUs and the United Cattle Raisers Association in Negros Occidental and Visayas (UCRAIN-V).

Recently, the office has delivered a pure brahman junior bull to businessman Jerry Sy, who availed and qualified under the Bull Loan program of the province, in his cattle multiplier farm at Brgy. Cansilayan, Murcia.

The ongoing program is open to all interested private cattle raisers in the province having an existing herd of cattle of more or less 10 cows. Those who may not able to qualify the Bull Loan, they still have an option of getting their cattle bred artificially through the Artificial Insemination (AI) using semen under the unified AI program of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The Bull Loan is one the province’s livestock production services which aims to improve and upgrade the genetic makeup of the local existing cattle breeds, increase the supply of beef to support the domestic and tourism demand of the province and improve beef quality.

Along with its other project under PAGIP, the PVO is highly encouraging Negrense to engage in cattle raising through improved breeds because of its greater potential for production and profitability finding cattle raising as economically important even to be raised backyard as well as promote the value-adding and marketing of cattle meat as prime beef cuts to maximize profit of fattening cattle.*
