The Philippine National Police still has not determined the motive for the killing of the provincial consultant on hospital affairs, but politics is among the angles being looked at, Col. Romy Palgue, Negros Occidental police director, said Thursday, April 15.

Mariano Antonio “Marton” Cui III, 62, was shot as he was leaving his office at Emerald Arcade at F.C. Ledesma Avenue in San Carlos City at about 8 p.m. Monday, April 12.

Cui, chief of staff of former Rep. Julio Ledesma, was a key player in Negros Occidental first district politics and was rumored to be planning to run for mayor of Toboso.

Palgue, however, stressed that the police have no leads on a specific motive yet.

He appealed to those who may have any information that could lead to the solution of the crime to come forward.

The police have been ordered to impound all vehicles with no license plates and conduction stickers to prevent similar crimes from being committed, Palgue said.

Palgue appealed to the public to report the presence of suspicious vehicles or persons to the police.

CCTV footage obtained by the police show a white Toyota van and silver grey Starex with no license plates or conduction stickers parked in the area where Cui was killed on the day the crime was committed.

The van was in the area from past 4 p.m. of April 12 until Cui was killed, Palgue said.

Palgue said they are still determining the weapon used to kill Cui whose assailant fired at him from a distance.

Cui sustained two bullet wounds below his neck and a bullet also hit his vehicle.

Palgue, who briefed Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson on the progress of the investigation, assured the public that the police is doing everything it can to solve the crime.

Lacson said the killing of Cui was definitely well planned and carried out by an expert.

Lacson said a reward for the arrest of Cui’s killer has not been discussed, but maybe if it can help it will be considered.*
