Phivolcs warns: ‘Tino’ could trigger Kanlaon lahar, muddy streamflows

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs)  warns that heavy rainfall expected from Typhoon “Tino” in the coming days could trigger lahar and muddy streamflows from Kanlaon Volcano.

These flows are projected to enter rivers and other drainage areas, a Phivolcs  lahar advisory on Monday, Nov. 3, said.

Phivolcs advises communities along and downstream of channels on the southern and western slopes of Kanlaon Volcano to be prepared for potential evacuation.

It also advised residents to avoid traversing affected streams, even those farther downslope.

PHIVOLCS strongly recommends increased vigilance and readiness in communities located within pre-determined zones susceptible to lahar and related hazards.

Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2.

Phivolcs reported that the volcano emitted ash six times from 12 a.m. Sunday to 12 a.m. Monday.

Prolonged and heavy rainfall may generate generally channel-confined post-eruption lahars and sediment-laden streamflows on major channels to drain down  the southern and western slopes of Kanlaon, Phivolcs said.

These flows are generated by intense rainfall eroding loose material from the remnant pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits of the October 24 explosive eruption, as well as loose ashfall from that event and more recent ash emissions.

Phivolcs said that potentially hot lahars and sediment-laden streamflows may specifically occur along  Tamburong/Ibid Creek in  Brgy Biak-na-Bato, and Baji-Baji Falls and Talaptapan Creek in Brgy Cabacungan, La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

These drainages are particularly vulnerable as they are headed on gullies covered by recent PDC deposits, it said.*
