The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a notice of increased volcanic ash emission events at Kanlaon Volcano on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Kanlaon that continues to degas had three volcanic ash emission events on Sunday and four on Saturday, Mari-Andylene Quintia, a Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology volcanologist, said.

The ash emissions were between 8:07 a.m. to 9:07 a.m. on Sunday, Phivolcs reported.

Since Oct. 19, continuous degassing with occasional weak ash emission has been occurring from the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano, the Phivolcs notice said.

Ash emission has been generally “quiet” and occurred without seismic or infrasound signals, it said.

Traces of ash were reported in Sitio Bais, Brgy. Yubo, La Carlota City and Brgy. Sag-ang, La Castellana on Saturday.

Sulfurous fumes were also experienced in Brgy. Yubo and Brgy. Sag-ang.

Microscopic examination of ash samples revealed a composition of mainly pulverized old rock within the edifice and not of material from new magma, Phivolcs said.

Kanlaon had 11 volcanic earthquakes and emitted 3,927 tons of sulfur dioxide from 12 a.m. Saturday to 12 a.m. Sunday, Phivolcs reported.*
