The P153,516,648 Sagay Feeder Port /Fish Landing in Barangay Old Sagay, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, was inaugurated Wednesday, October 20.

The feeder port has allowed roll-on-roll-off vessels from Iloilo and Cebu to dock in Sagay and will boost the export of produce from the city and neighboring areas to other parts of the country, Sagay Mayor Alfredo Marañon III said.

It will also be an added attraction to locators at the Sagay City economic zone, he said.

Marañon was joined by Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson and Department of Agriculture regional director Remelyn Recoter at the blessing and turnover of the port.

Lacson said the port is a fulfillment of what former Gov. Alfredo Marañon and the mayor started years ago.

“This feeder port and fish landing, together with other interventions and assistance of the Department of Agriculture and the Philippine Rural Development Project, will provide the needed push to improve production, optimize income capacity, and mitigate the debilitating effects of the pandemic to the agricultural sector,” Lacson said.

Agriculture must not be limited to mere production, it has to be enhanced by enterprise, he added.

The project will increase the market value of agricultural and fishery products that pass through the feeder port, Lacson said.

The port will help in the transport of agricultural goods and other commodities from Sagay City to neighboring islands, mitigate the problem of accessibility to bigger market opportunities, and give farmers and buyers a common area for trade, Lacson said.*
