The prevailing sentiments of civil society groups on the outcome of the 29th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, that ended Sunday, Nov. 24, are disappointment and outrage, San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza said.

“Year in and out, climate-vulnerable communities in the Philippines and across the world lose their lives and loved ones from intensifying impacts of the climate crisis, not counting the immense biodiversity loss,” Alminaza, who was in Baku, Azerbaijan, said.

“The final text of COP 29 is cruel, placing a price tag of ‘at least’ $300 billion annually on this suffering. In contrast, oil and gas companies in the US alone and in 2023 alone earned $244 billion”. Alminaza said.

“Such decision of world leaders is tantamount to delivering our people to death and destruction. We urge our government in the Philippines and in developing nations to continue to stand up and fight for the poor and vulnerable for an ambitious and just finance goal,” he said.

“Before it’s too late, developed countries, highly responsible for polluting our Mother Earth, must assume their moral responsibility to make reparation for the loss and damage they have caused,” Alminaza said.*
