An active member of the New People’s Army surrendered to 94th Infantry Battalion troopers in Brgy. Tambo, Ayungon, Negros Oriental, on Wednesday, January 19, because of his comrades’ alleged false promises, hunger, and exhaustion.

Samson “Dener” Tillo was a squad leader of the Central Negros Front 2. He also surrendered his .45 caliber pistol with magazine and ammunition.

Prior to his surrender, he was actively involved in propaganda and recruitment in the hinterlands of Binalbagan, Himamaylan City and Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental, the Army said in a press statement.

Tillo was also said to be involved in 10 armed engagements with the government troopers during his stint with the rebel group in almost a decade.

Tillo said he surrendered because of the continuous hardships, hunger, and false promises of NPA leaders, according to the press release.

He also revealed the alleged continuous exploitation of the NPA among the masses in the outlying sitios of Central and Southern Negros, it added.

He is now undergoing custodial and stress debriefing before his enrollment to the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program to receive immediate welfare assistance, livelihood assistance, and incentives for the surrendered firearm.*
