Families and friends of Negros Political Prisoners and Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) staged a protest in front of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology – Negros Island Region (BJMP-NIR) on Wednesday, Dec. 3, to demand immediate action versus alleged worsening conditions in local detention facilities.

The protest was held to also mark International Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners, a Human Rights Advocates Negros press release said.

Detainees at the Negros Occidental District Jail – Male Dormitory (NODJ-MD) also launched a fasting to condemn what they describe as “cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment” under the leadership of their warden, the press release said.

The Negros Political Prisoners and PDLs are demanding the immediate suspension or removal of the warden.

Families, supporters, and human rights advocates call on the BJMP National Headquarters, the Commission on Human Rights, and the public to take action, it added.

Caritas Philippines president and Diocese of San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza also issued statement in solidarity with the fasting PDL.*
