Negros Occidental awards P1.3M in incentives to reg’l meet medalists

The Negros Occidental provincial government on Wednesday, March 25, distributed cash incentives worth PHP1.35 million to Negrense student-athletes who won medals in the first Negros Island Region Athletic Association Meet (NIRAAM) earlier this month.

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson led the giving out of awards together with Schools Governance and Operations Division chief Romeo Sison Sr. of the Department of Education-Division of Negros Occidental at the Capitol Social Hall in Bacolod City.

“Your achievements reflect not only excellence in sports, but also the true spirit of Negrense pride,” Lacson told the student-athletes.

The 417 gold medalists each received PHP1,500 or a total of PHP625,500, while the 236 silver medalists got PHP1,000 or a total of PHP236,000.

The 104 bronze medalists were given PHP800 each for a total of PHP83,200.

The remaining amount was distributed to the coaches and trainers of the outstanding athletes.

The Negrense medalists were led by swimmer Ethan Base of Doña Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School in La Carlota City.

Base was declared the most bemedalled athlete of NIRAAM 2026 after winning seven gold medals.

The gold medalists will represent the NIR in the Palarong Pambansa 2026 hosted by Agusan del Sur from May 24 to 31.

Lacson said Negros Occidental is sending 266 athletes to the Palaro.*PNA
