Inflation in the Negros Island Region slowed further to 4.9 percent in June from 5.4 percent in May, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported.
PSA in a report of Tuesday, July 7, said NIR recorded the lowest inflation rate among all regions outside the National Capital Region during the month.
Among the Visayas regions, NIR posted the lowest inflation, followed by Western Visayas at 6.8 percent and Eastern Visayas at 7 percent.
Central Visayas recorded the highest inflation rate in the country at 10 percent, although this was lower than its 10.8-percent rate in May.
NIR’s 4.9-percent inflation was also equal to the rate recorded in Metro Manila.
PSA data showed that 13 regions outside Metro Manila registered slower inflation in June compared with the previous month.*
The continued slowdown in NIR was accompanied by lower annual increases in several commodity groups.
Transport inflation in the region declined to 11.3 percent in June from 15.3 percent in May.
Inflation for restaurants and accommodation services also slowed to 7.1 percent from 8.5 percent, while furnishings and routine household maintenance eased to 8.7 percent from 9.4 percent.
Recreation, sport and culture inflation declined to 9.3 percent from 9.6 percent, while health inflation slightly eased to 6.7 percent from 6.8 percent.
Education services posted a -0.3 percent year-on-year decline in June after recording 4.3 percent inflation in May.
However, faster price increases were recorded in food and non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages and tobacco, clothing and footwear, housing and utilities, information and communication, and personal care.
Nationally, the PSA attributed the slower June inflation mainly to the easing annual increase in transport costs to 12.8 percent from 16.2 percent.
Slower increases in food and non-alcoholic beverages and household furnishings also contributed to the national downtrend.
The country’s average inflation rate from January to June stood at 4.8 percent.*
