COVID-19 cases in Negros Occidental have increased but the situation is not alarming, Dr. Girlie Pinongan, OIC provincial health officer, said Wednesday, May 3.

Negros Occidental had seven new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday for a total of 87 active cases.

Pinongan said the majority of COVID-19 cases were mild with those hit opting for homecare.

There were 12 persons admitted at the Cadiz District Hospital for COVID-19 as of Tuesday, she said.

There were 505 COVID-19 cases recorded in Negros Occidental from January to April 24.

She said the highest number of new COVID-19 cases that they recorded in a day this year was 22 in the third week of April.

The COVID-19 deaths in Negros Occidental for 2023 were nine and not ten as earlier reported. One death happened on Dec. 29, 2022 but was reported in January 2023 that is why the initial report was 10 deaths, she said.

Most of those who died were unvaccinated, she said.

Pinongan said Negrenses are urged to continue wearing face masks for their own safety.

If one does not feel well one should go home and self-isolate, she said.

She said Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are expected to arrive in Negros Occidental for the second booster shots of persons 18 years old and above.*
