NegOcc dengue cases on downward trend

Dengue cases in Negros Occidental are on a downward trend, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) assured on Friday, Sept. 5, as it continues its campaign to prevent infections, especially during the rainy season.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Girlie Pinongan said that cases in the province have generally been declining, with the exception of a spike observed in July.

She said that information drives are ongoing in various towns and cities, urging Negrenses to maintain proper sanitation, clean their surroundings, and remove stagnant water that can breed mosquitoes.

As of Aug. 30, the province has recorded 4,296 dengue cases, 9.26 percent higher compared to the same period last year.

Nine deaths were also reported from January to Aug. 30, most of whom were schoolchildren.

Pinongan said the fatalities were often due to patients being brought to health facilities too late, as well as complications from the illness.*
