The aftermath of last week’s heavy rains and floods in Negros Occidental has left six dead and an estimated P17,280,970 in damages to crops, aquaculture and livestock.
The damages in the initial report released by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) on Monday, July 21, are expected to increase as more local government units submit their reports.
The heavy rains and floods brought on by Severe Tropical Storm Crising and the Southwest Monsoon hit 165 barangays across 19 local government units in Negros Occidental, affecting 44,556 residents.
While the majority of the 31,346 residents who sought refuge in evacuation centers have returned home, 822 individuals remained, the PDRRMC reported on Monday.
Kabankalan City and Binalbagan are currently assessing the extent of the damage within their areas and are preparing to declare states of calamity.
The PDRRMC placed the death toll at six on Monday.
This includes four previously reported drowning victims and two casualties due to electrocution.
Irene Bel Ploteña, head of the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD), identified the electrocution victims as Jornalyn Omaque, 36, and Florante Janoy, 40.
They were electrocuted at a house in Purok Daisy, Brgy. Talacagay, Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental, during heavy rains on Thursday morning, July 17, she said.
The drowning victims previously reported were Glen Francisco Trejero, 30, of Sagay City; Mejhon Cordero, 44, of Himamaylan City; Daniel Agustin, 12, of Binalbagan; and Asuncion Subong, 84, of Binalbagan.
The initial PDRRMC report detailed the following losses in the agricultural sector:
- Rice – P11,641,388;
- High-value crops – P1,456,423;
- Corn – P371,575;
- Aquaculture – P1,362,400; and
- Livestock – P2,376,311.
Moises Padilla town reported P28,885,661 in damage to infrastructure and crops.*
