A 13-year-old Grade 7 student who was reported missing after school was found dead in a river in Bago City, Negros Occidental, on Thursday morning, March 5.

Police said the victim, a resident of Brgy. Binubuhan, failed to return home on Wednesday, prompting his family to search for him.

The boy’s body was discovered the following morning in a river along a canal of the National Irrigation Authority in Hacienda Mercedes, Brgy. Ma-ao.

Authorities said the student was found wearing only his underwear.

Bago City police chief, Lt. Col. James Latayon, said the student reportedly arrived late at school on Wednesday and decided not to attend classes.

Instead, he allegedly went to the river to swim.

Witnesses told police that the victim was seen swimming with other children earlier that day.

However, no one reported that the victim had drowned.

Authorities said they are waiting for the results of the post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and whether foul play was involved.*
