A minor explosive eruption at Kanlaon Volcano during moderate to heavy rain triggered muddy stream flows in La Castellana and Moises Padilla in Negros Occidental Thursday afternoon, Feb. 6, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Continuous rainfall transformed ash deposits into mudflow in the Buhangin River that flows through La Castellana and Moises Padilla, Ptolemy Mañego, science research assistant at the Phivolcs Kanlaon Observatory in La Carlota City, said.
The Moises Padilla Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office posted photos of the muddy stream flow as seen from the Intiguiwan Bridge in the town.
A minor explosive eruption at the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano occurred at 3:11 p.m. Thursday and lasted for two minutes based on seismic and infrasound records, Phivolcs said.
Ashfall was reported in Brgy. Sag-ang, La Castellana, it said.
The event was barely visible via IP (Internet Protocol) Camera on the southern side of Kanlaon’s edifice due to cloudy weather, Phivolcs said.*
