Meat prices continue to increase

Prices of meat in Negros Occidental markets continue to increase despite the drop in the cost of liveweight supply following the 60-day price ceiling on pork imposed by the government in Metro Manila.

Based on the weekly monitoring of the Provincial Veterinary Office, the prevailing price of pork has increased by P20.34 per kilogram from P204.76/kg on February 1 to P225.10/kg today, February 8.

The prices of beef also increased by P6.50/kg, from P274.45/kg to P280.95/kg, carabeef at P267.83/kg from P264.40, and chevon at P337.39/kg from P320.33/kg.

The price for broiler chicken also increased by P23.51/kg at P182.86/kg from P159.35/kg, while the price for native chicken remained the same since last week at P253.24.

Eggs, which increased slightly this week, are priced at P6.66 (small), P7.33 (medium), P8 (large), and P8.61 (extra large), and P12.78 (salted) per piece.

In Bacolod City, the average price of carabeef is P250/kg, beef – P260, pork – P255, broiler chicken – P185, native – P250, and eggs at P7 (small), P7.50 (medium), P8 (large), P8.50 (extra large), and P12.50 (salted) per piece.

DOWN

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said today, February 8, that the price of pork liveweight has gone down by P20/kg since last week.

“Earlier these vendors complained about hog raisers manipulating the price. Obviously, it’s not them – it was never the hog raisers that manipulated the price or brought the price up. Proof to that is the (price of) liveweight has gone down by P20/kg but the prices in the market are still the same – traders are always the ones who make money,” the governor said.

Negros Occidental continues to import liveweight pork to Luzon and several parts of Visayas.*
