La Castellana town in Negros Occidental distributed financial assistance on Saturday, Nov. 16, to families whose houses were destroyed and damaged by Typhoon “Tino” .

Typhoon “Tino” struck La Castellana with sudden, overwhelming intensity, an executive brief submitted by Mayor Añejo Nicor to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who visited the town on Saturday, Nov. 15, said.

“A massive flashflood surged through multiple barangays, carrying mud, rocks, logs, and debris that destroyed homes, swept away lives, isolated upland communities, and crippled major infrastructure,” it said.

“The scale of destruction has exceeded the municipality’s response capacity, immediate national government intervention is urgently needed,” Nicor said, pointing out that they are broke after also having had evacuees from Kanlaon Volcano earlier this year.

On Saturday they distributed P10,000 to each to La Castellana residents whose houses were destroyed and P5,000 to those that were damaged.

Nicor said 3,029 houses were destroyed and 6,832 were damaged in La Castellana.

He also said 13 La Castellana residents died in the typhoon and 14 are still missing.

The typhoon affected 13,591 La Castellana families and 1,657 families (5,819 individuals) were sheltered in 27 evacuation centers.

The La Castellana report placed agricultural losses at P184.6 million and damage to houses at P359.2 million.

There were also collapsed bridges, eroded roads, damaged slope protections, Nicor said.

He said it is important that bridges that connect residents to the town proper are repaired.*
