Marcos listens to concerns raised by sugar leaders

Presidential aspirant Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his runningmate Sara Duterte met with the leaders two sugar groups opposing the government’s planned importation of 200,000 metric tons of sugar at Stonehill Suites in Bacolod City on Wednesday, February 23.

They met with leaders of the United Sugar Producers Federation (UNIFED) led by Manuel Lamata and Asociacion de Agricultores de La Carlota y Pontevedra Inc. headed by Roberto Cuenca .

The Confederation of Sugar Producers Associations is supporting Vice President Leni Robredo for president, Lamata said.

Marcos, at the meeting, acknowledged that the high cost of farm inputs seems to be a general concern in the whole agriculture sector.

He noted that because urea fertilizer is a petroleum product, it is affected by the rising prices of oil.

Marcos also cited the need for research and development in the sugar industry to find new varieties resistant to pests and changes in weather.

Former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said Marcos met with the sugar leaders to listen to their concerns.

Senatorial candidate Gilbert Teodoro said he supports Marcos and Carpio because they have a forward looking agenda that seeks to confront the crises that we face every day, and to plan for the future.

There is a need to balance the needs of the sugar industry because at the end of the day lives and livelihood are affected, Teodoro said.*
