A 32-year-old man tagged in the killing of a policeman during a buy-bust operation died at a Bacolod City hospital on Saturday morning.

The resident of Barangay Sum-ag, Bacolod, died at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Hospital at 5:27 a.m., Bacolod City Police Director PCol. Eugene Rebadomia said on Sunday.

Rebadomia said the man had grappled with officers attempting to disarm him after he fatally shot PMSgt. Romulo Galvez during a buy-bust operation at Alijis Road in Barangay Singcang, Bacolod City, on Thursday night.

The man was not taken to a police station but was brought directly to the hospital for a medical check-up after being restrained, Rebadomia said.

Upon arrival at the hospital the 32-year-old man was unruly and was refusing medical examination, the police director said.

The attending doctor recommended confinement to calm him down, Rebadomia said, adding that the man’s live-in partner was even able to visit him Friday morning.

Police have not yet received an official report from the hospital regarding the actual cause of death, he said.

The 32-year-old had a prior criminal records at Bacolod police stations for various offenses, including robbery and theft, Rebadomia said.

PBGen. Arnold Tomas Ibay, Police Regional Office Negros Island Region director, visited Galvez’s wake and extended financial assistance to his family.

The sacrifice of Galvez “will never be forgotten, and his legacy of courage and dedication will continue to inspire the entire police force”, Ibay said.

Galvez was previously assigned to Sulu before joining the Bacolod City Police Office as a SWAT member. He later served as a warrant and drug operative and received numerous commendations and medals, a Bacolod police report said.*
