LTO NIR chief urges action for safer roads

Land Transportation Office Negros Island Region Acting Regional Director Jeck Conlu called for measurable and concrete actions to improve road safety as the country marked World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday, Nov. 16.

Conlu said the annual commemoration should move beyond grief and serve as a catalyst for stronger, unified efforts to prevent road crashes.

“We honor every life lost, every journey cut short, and every family whose world was altered by road tragedy. Their memory demands more than sorrow, it demands action,” he said.

He stressed that while mistakes on the road are inevitable, death must never be their consequence.

Conlu said the LTO is committed to an evidence-based road safety strategy anchored on the Safe System Approach and aligned with the UN Global Plan for the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety.

“This is not abstract policy — it is a concrete, measurable course of action,” he added.

Conlu said the observance should build momentum for long-term reforms.

“We must transform memory into momentum, ensuring that this year’s theme: ‘Journey to Zero: Remembering the Past, Safeguarding the Future’, becomes our collective mission,” he said.*
