Two vehicles allegedly operating illegally as public transportation were apprehended by the Land Transportation Office-Negros Island Region in separate operations in E.B. Magalona and Silay City on Tuesday morning, Aug. 11.
LTO-NIR said the first vehicle was intercepted in E.B. Magalona at around 8:02 a.m. while carrying five passengers from Bacolod City to Sagay City.
The passengers were allegedly charged fares ranging from P100 to P150 each.
Less than an hour later, at around 8:56 a.m., another vehicle was apprehended in Silay City while transporting 13 passengers from Sagay City to Bacolod City.
Authorities said the second vehicle was allegedly collecting fares of P70 to P150 per passenger.
Both vehicles were allegedly operating for hire without the required Certificate of Public Convenience or Permit to Operate.
LTO-NIR said the violation carries a fine of P200,000 per vehicle, or a combined P400,000 for the two apprehensions.
The operations were conducted by personnel of the Regional Law Enforcement Service as part of the agency’s continuing campaign against colorum and unauthorized transport operations.
LTO-NIR OIC Regional Director Jeck Conlu said enforcement efforts will continue, stressing that unauthorized public transport operations pose risks to commuters.
“Colorum operations have no place on our roads. We will continue to enforce the law firmly and consistently because public safety cannot be compromised,” Conlu said.
