Kiko, Talisay gov’t pushing for tripartite dev’t council

As Talisay City bids to become a Green, Smart and Resilient City in the next three years, Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) is pushing for the creation of a Government-Academe-Industry Council to spearhead a comprehensive plan to address, among others, the large skills gap between the academe and the industry.

Benitez pointed to the current situation even in the national level, where educational institutions cannot cope with the skills requirement of industries during a coordination meeting in Talisay City on Tuesday, July 19.

As early as 2019, Benitez posed a challenge to Talisay City being the seat of several higher education facilities and its proximity to key government agencies that can provide technical support, to mobilize a convergence to initiate and collaborate initiatives to address this situation in the local level, a press release said.

He said the local government plays a crucial role in being the conduit of programs to generate jobs and push local economy.

The meeting gathered key representatives of the Talisay City government, Carlos Hilado Memorial State University, Technological University of the Philippines – Visayas, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and Department of Trade and Industry.

As the body agreed on the drafting of initial steps to formalize the creation and operationalization of the Council, Cong. Kiko further underscored the need for a Human Resource Development Plan, an agriculture data base and an information system for a more relevant and viable implementation.

Present during the meeting were Talisay Vice Mayor Nic Jalandoni, Talisay City Administrator Jose Jonathan Ealdama, Assistant City Administrator Ismael Penado, and Talisay Economic and Investment Promotion Officer Dr. Mae Llamas.

Also in attendance were CHMSU External Affairs Officer Rhoderick Samonte; TUP-V Campus Director Dr. Eric Malooy, with Engr. Jovel Young and Rutchel Pabalinas; and DTI provincial director Rachel Nufable, with Kenneth Villarosa.*
