Heavy rain causes 1,381 residents in Talisay, Silay to evacuate

Heavy rains and flooding cause 1,381 residents of Silay and Talisay cities in Negros Occidental to evacuate on Sunday evening and early Monday, Feb. 8 and 9.

The evacuees returned home later in the day, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported.

There were 162 families (770 persons) who evacuated in Silay City and 157 families (611 persons) in Talisay City, the PDRRMO said.

The “Kusina ni Mayor Weng” extended hot meals and family food packs to the affected families in Talisay City, Dionela Madrona, Talisay social welfare officer, said.

With current weather systems being monitored, including the Shear Line and Northeast Monsoon, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau has issued a list of 17 barangays in Negros Occidental that are susceptible to flooding and rain-induced landslides.

They are barangays Bug-ang and Magticol in Toboso; Celestino Villacin and VF Gustilo in Cadiz City; Canlusong and San Isidro in E.B. Magalona; Bagong Silang, Bunga, Igmaya-an, Kumaliskis, and Pandanon in Don Salvador Benedicto; Lalong in Calatrava; Patag in Silay City; Puey in Sagay City; Canlandog and Pandanon in Murcia; and Cabatangan in Talisay City.*
