“This thing happened on the last day of the filing (of Certificates of Candidacy) so we are still trying to sort out how to address that situation in Kabankalan”.
That was the reaction of Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson on Thursday, Oct. 10, to the move of former Rep. Genaro Alvarez to run against former governor Isidro Zayco for mayor of Kabankalan City.
Alvarez and Zayco are both Nationalist People’s Coalition and Love Negros members.
Zayco is running as the official NPC bet while Alvarez in a surprise move filed his COC as an independent on Tuesday.
Lacson said he has already committed to support Zayco.
The move of Alvarez was “very surprising” that is why we are hoping that we can still sort this out,” he said.
He noted that during their last Love Negros gathering clearly there was only one NPC candidate at the time who was Zayco.
Also running for mayor of Kabankalan are incumbent Benjie Miranda, John Cordero, Eliezer Duron Jr., Leo Oquias and Florelyn Mungaray.
Meanwhile, Lacson assured that Love Negros is supporting Rep. Mercedes Alvarez (NPC) who is seeking reelection in the 6th District of Negros Occidental.
She is being challenged by former Hinoba-an Mayor Ernesto Estrao of PDP-Laban.
“Surveys show an overwhelming win by Congresswoman Chedeng Alvarez, she is well loved by the 6th District,” Lacson pointed out.*
