Mayor Greg Gasataya on Friday, Feb. 6, warned against the spread of false and misleading reports online regarding the flooding situation in Bacolod City as Tropical Depression “Basyang” continues to affect the area.
The mayor’s statement came after several unverified reports and photos circulated on social media, which the City Government identified as “fake news” designed to exploit the calamity for digital engagement.
“The spread of unverified information during a disaster is irresponsible and dangerous,” Gasataya said. “It creates unnecessary fear, disrupts ongoing response efforts, and puts lives and property at risk.”
The mayor expressed his disappointment over individuals who use disaster situations to drive social media traffic.
He characterized the trend of “content monetization” at the expense of public safety as a disservice to the community during an active crisis.
“It is sad and disappointing that, in the middle of a calamity, some choose to exploit the situation for views, likes, and content monetization at the expense of truth and public safety,” the Mayor added.
He said the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and other concerned agencies are currently on the ground, conducting 24/7 monitoring.
All official updates are being released based strictly on verified data from these teams, he said.
Gasataya urged residents to remain vigilant and to cross-check any information they see online against official government channels.
The public is urged to rely only on official advisories from the city government and authorized authorities, he said.
“In times of disaster, truth saves lives. Let us act responsibly and verify before we share,” the mayor said.*
