Floods destroy 76 houses, damage 539 others, 1 dead

The floods that hit three cities and one town in the third district of Negros Occidental in the early hours of Friday, the first day of 2021, left 76 houses destroyed and 539 damaged, updated reports showed today, January 3.

The floods caused by runoff water brought on by heavy rains hit Victorias, Talisay, and Silay cities, and EB Magalona town affecting 15,933 families.

Mayor Francis Palanca said 38 houses were destroyed and 111 were damaged in Victorias City.

Ramil Panes, 26, who was reported missing since New Year’s Eve after a drinking spree with friends was found dead in the shoreline of Barangay 6-A in Victorias City on Saturday, Palanca also said.

Damage to livestock and crops in Victorias City was initially placed at P478,100. However, the mayor said a survey of the damage to livestock, crops, and infrastructure was still ongoing and the figures could increase.

The floods affected 8,976 families in Victorias City, 644 families (2,584 individuals) of whom evacuated, he added.

Mayor Neil Lizares said 19 houses were washed out and 235 were damaged in Talisay City. The floods also affected 4,023 families in Talisay City, 350 of whom evacuated.

In Silay City, 19 houses were destroyed and 193 were damaged, Mayor Mark Golez said.

There were also 1,849 (5,718 individuals) families affected by the flooding in Silay City and 1,085 in EB Magalona, Zeaphard Caelian, head of the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division, added.*
