Flooding washes down volcanic debris, 17 families evacuate in La Castellana

The flooding in Barangay Biak-na-Bato, La Castellana*

Heavy rain triggered flooding that again washed down volcanic debris from Kanlaon Volcano causing 17 families in Barangay Biak-na-Bato, La Castellana, Negros Occidental, to evacuate.

La Castellana Mayor Añejo Nicor said they are still determining if the water with volcanic debris that overflowed from the clogged Ibid Creek was a muddy stream flow or lahar.

The water overflowed from another part of Ibid Creek that is filled with hardened volcanic debris, Nicor said.

The dredged debris that were placed on the side of creek were again washed back in.

He said flooding occurred Sunday night and they are on alert for more heavy rain that could be brought on by Super Typhoon “Nando” and the Southwest Monsoon.

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said in La Castellana “lahar sediments came down again, we will just have to continue clearing again”.

He said the provincial government sent more heavy equipment to clear the area but it will take some time to finish the job.

That is why he is hoping commercial companies will be allowed to clear Ibid Creek to hasten work, he said.*
